Buying retired LEGO: what to check

  • Compare like with like. Sealed, used and complete, and incomplete sets sell for very different prices. Every set page here prices them separately.
  • Count the minifigures. They're the first thing sold off from used sets and often the most valuable part.
  • Check the box and seals. On retired sets, box condition can move the price a lot.
  • Look at price per piece. It's a quick way to compare value across sets of different sizes. Try the calculator.
  • Watch before you buy. Prices move. Star a set to add it to your watchlist and come back to check.

Questions

What does "retired" mean for a LEGO set?

LEGO stops making a set when it retires, usually two to three years after release. Once shops sell their remaining stock, the only way to buy it is second-hand, mostly on eBay and BrickLink.

Are retired LEGO sets worth more?

Popular retired sets, especially large sets, modular buildings, Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series and Ideas sets, often sell for more than their original price, and sealed boxes fetch the most. Many smaller sets don't rise much at all, so check the live price on each set's page rather than assuming.

How do I know what a retired set is worth?

Open the set's page here. We show the typical eBay price for new and sealed, used and complete, and incomplete copies, based on current Buy It Now listings, and we record prices every day to build a history.

Is it safe to buy retired LEGO on eBay?

Usually, if you pay through eBay so the Money Back Guarantee applies. Check seller feedback, ask whether all the pieces and minifigures are included, and be wary of sealed sets far below the typical price, because they can be knock-offs.
